Weekend Recap

Roll call: Who made it downtown for Jobama?

Mrs. Shoo and I talked about it briefly, but we had a laundry list of stuff, so standing out in the heat for three hours was kind of out of the question. I am curious to hear everyone’s thoughts on the rally and your opinions about these two canidates.

Unofficial Spfldblogger night with the Sliders!

Yes, that’s right bloggers, commentators, lurkers of the internet, July 13th (this Sunday) has been designated as the meet-up date. The game begins at 6:05. Check out the Sliders page for more info or Johann’s blog post.

And just for a roll call so we know who to look out for, can those attending leave a comment? I think the plan is to show up early and get seats all in the same section. Unless you want to be creepy and sit by yourselves. And since everyone hasn’t posted their mug for the world, just look for me.

Again, everyone is welcome to join us.

My kind of town.

A while back there was a blog post from a nondescript blogger that was leaving ‘Stinkfield’ for good. They had lived in Abe’s town for three years and their final words was that it was one of the biggest pits in the universe.

I guess they hadn’t checked out the new Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum.

I was taken back by their post. For the first time ever, I was offended by someone talking badly about my town. I’ve only lived here my whole life and for the majority of it I would have told you living here sucked too, but in recent years it’s grown on me. I’ve got a great job, my house is more than affordable, and it takes me less than ten minutes to get to work.

Now the segue.

Those local cable access heroes Just Two Guys are considering doing a documentary based on a staggering online poll from the SJ-R where 96% of pollees rather live somewhere other than ‘Stinkfield.’ Before they start filming their doing their own poll to get a better idea of what people think of Springfield.

I’ll just go ahead and publicly answer mine:

Many people say there is nothing to do in Springfield. Do you agree with this statement? Please explain your answer.

There’s stuff to do, you just have to look a little harder in Springfield.

The music scene is a hit or miss. Most weekends all you can find in town are local cover bands or karaoke joints. But I’ve managed to see The Avett Brothers, BB King, John Prine, The Ditty Bops, Alkaline Trio, Mu330 and plenty of unknown punk bands, all in town.

Don’t expect to see a Dave Mathews Band or Poison, unless the State Fair happens to book the act, but they usually slip under the radar.

The bar scene. I have my favorite place, but the number of bars downtown has to have tripled in the last ten years. I heard someone say once that Springfield had one of the highest bar per capita ratios in the country. Don’t know if that’s true or not but they’re plenty of neighborhood bars scattered throughout the city.

The Arts. Last weekend was the annual art fair, and in the summer the Muni is a great showcase of local talent.

Random things you could do in Springfield (or neighboring communities): Rock Climbing in Rochester, play pool at Mowie’s Cue, really good Mountain biking at Site M (okay, a 45 min drive), fishing at Lake Springfield, Frisbee golf at Lincoln Park.

A common complaint about Springfield is that there is a serious lack of shopping. Do you agree or disagree? Again, please offer an explanation to support your answer.

I’ve got Best Buy, Ace, and Old Navy. Covered head to toe.

Is Springfield headed in the right direction? (yes or no)

Yes. But could someone add some hills please.

In your opinion, has Springfield gotten better in the last 10-20 years or has it gotten worse? Please explain your answer with some examples.

I am going to be optimistic here. I remember when Lincolnshire was just a cornfield and the Olive Garden was the newest chain restaurant.

In the last 20 years, downtown has improved tremendously, there’s a skate park and two bike trails.

There’s probably a slew of other things, but those stick out.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live? Why?

Fort Collins, Co. It’s beautiful, Fat Tire beer, and I don’t think I could ever get tired of looking at mountains.

Why do you choose to live in Springfield? Give as many examples as necessary.

It’s affordable.

My commute is under 7 minutes.

1 1/2hrs from St. Louis, 3 hrs from Chicago.

How would you describe the people of Springfield? Please use as many adjectives as possible.

Corny, Abraham Lincoln-y, flat, relaxed, Midwestern.

What is your opinion of the job situation in Springfield?

Business is good in the IT field. When I first graduated entry level IT jobs were few and far between and a lot of state jobs were in limbo, but looking through the classifieds lately, things look good.

Con maldad hacia sombreros rojo.

Babel Fish tells me it means “With badness towards hats red” which gives me no clue what in the heck it means other than recalling that Dan has a vendetta against the ladies in purple with red hats.

Well his badness has just released a new address (http://blogfreespringfield.com) and design on the Blog Free Springfield blog. Very rojo.

No puppy pictures, but a good way to kill an afternoon.

The Illinois Times’ Best of Springfield poll is up and running again. This year I am not campaigning for the “best” again, I think I’ve punished you all with enough puppy pictures for not choosing me as the best last year. (Muhha-hah) Actually, in the last year I’ve enjoyed reading all the local blogs. They’re all like horseshoes but different meats / fillings. Man, I love horseshoes.

  • Dissarranging Mine = THE OH (Original Horseshoe) with hamburger.
  • daveheinzel.com = Animated dancing fries with melocream donut center and a large mountain dew
  • Capitol Fax Blog = Pork with Blago cheese on two unnecessary plates- extra crispy because it’s way over due.
  • Anon Communist = Replace the cheese with The Hill spaghetti sauce and pour over some cool band names and Cardinal red fries.
  • Blevins = NSFW meat with hot sauce - no cheese.
  • 11tHour = Replace the cheese with beer and add some satire.
  • Just Two Guys = Pretty in Pink with hot tv 20 anchor fries (glutton free of course).
  • 30? = Social commentary with Journey’s Don’t Stop Believing sauce.
  • Honey & Quinine = Raman noodles with discounted cheese with a side of aeronautical poetry.
  • BFS = Red Hat Lady leftovers. You get no horseshoe.
  • Unpainted Huffhines = Documented movie references poured over a Friday link dump.

And if you’re a local Spfld blog and not up here, I am sorry because I am just about out of wit. I am computer nerd - what do you expect? This was a challenging assignment and I almost hit the delete button and posted another dog pic.

Trust me, I’ve read all of your blogs. Even the ones I question why I keep coming back to. You probably question why you keep coming back to this one.

So this year, I think we should all be the “Best of.”

For redundancy.

Doh!

Must share.

Kudos to the Sj-r who has gone completely free and made some web 2.0 friendly improvements. I check out the news and blogs almost on a twice daily basis, so this will be a welcomed improvement. They’ve also added the ability to share stories with social news sites like: Digg, Newsvine, Del.icio.us, Reddit, and Facebook.

I don’t want to knock the new improvements because I love seeing the site move more to the mainstream of the web, but I think they may have overloaded on social news sites. You say what? I’ll explain.

Digg if you do, bury if you don’t. Digg is a great news site. It’s a collection of user submitted stories that the digg community decides what’s news worthy. If a percentage of diggers find a story worthwhile then it is presented to the “front page.” The front page is what the majority of the visitors to digg.com see.

The thing about Digg is that it’s a geek site. Really.

These are some stories that are hot on digg right now:

Geek Squad Caught On Video Steaing P0rn From Customer’s Computer

Microsoft Announces 3-Year 360 Warranty Extension

AT&T Deathstar Logo Perfect Fit on iPhone [PIC]

And if you want to get really generic, these type of stories will surely make it to the front page:

Apple (including the iPhone), Wii, how the PS3 sucks, global warming, Ubuntu, Vista, cop brutality, Bush sucks, Ron Paul, Google, Iraq…ect.

Not one mention of how Blago is staying in Springfield for the special session. But that’s not to say that the sj-r.com has never made digg. Sj-r, I am going to have to say you’re out of your realm on this one.

Newsvine. I’ve been to the site before. I may even have a login but it never really impressed me.

Del.icio.us is the url that taught me how to spell ‘delicious’ correctly. I use it all the time. It’s a bookmarking site that users can bookmark a site and tag it with relative terms. This enables users to search through their links for a particular subject, as well as, the rest of the communities’ links.

Twenty-five people have bookmarked the Sj-r.com. As if it is that hard to remember.

This site is more than applicable for the sj-r. Now I can tag all the SPD stories and cross reference them if I ever get pulled over.

Reddit kind of falls in the same line with Digg. It’s owned by the same company that owns Wired the magazine. I prefer Digg over Reddit.

Facebook is an interesting choice. Now the median age of Facebook users is around 23, but the power of the site is that once an article is shared, then everyone in that user’s network will see it in their News Feed. But what’s the average age of a Sj-r surfer? Ehh 45? Not very compatible; however, I did share “SJ-R.COM - Govenor won’t testify on lottery” it precedes my YouTube clip of the “Beer Drinking Dog.”

Unfortunately, we don’t live in a web 2.0 hot-spot like Silicon Valley or San Francisco where everyone is in the “know.” I think in due time though the masses will understand that AOL is not the Internet and Timmy is not a ‘webmaster’ because he pimped out his MySpace account.

I don’t know how many comments the Sj-r is going to get from the “slow news day” guy that dig is misspelled.

Take it as you will, as I am just a guy who posts dog pics.

The Avett Brothers

… are coming to town.

Thanks Just-Two-Guys for the heads up.

While we were sleeping last night, it looks like Russ put a new coat of HTML on SpringfieldRewind.com.

Blog for beer.

The following blog post was bribed with free beer.

The Movie Geeks Club is showing Leon (The Professional) at Capital City Bar and Grill. I know nothing about the movie, but it probably won’t be as good as Shrek III. I am still going though because you can order a nice tasty horse shoo while sipping (or chugging in Russ’s case)  an adult beverage while watching a montster of a movie screen.

So who’s up for it?

Sunset.

Chase the Puggle.

Had to pull this one from the Flickr vault. Did not make it home for lunch today (Sorry Nattie).

Has everyone see the article about the city’s new Segways? Is Springfield that big that cops can’t ride a bike or walk?

Jolly Tomale

The Jolly Tomale on Wabash will be no more after May 19th. Better get your fill of sanchos while you still can.

Publish.

Marie has a very nice tutorial on how to keep up with all the different Springfield bloggers. A total of 69 different bloggers on the list.

She also gives me praise on including all the posts into one simple RSS feed on Spfldbloggers.com. Marie, I didn’t know you wanted this feature for so long; should’ve given me a nudge.

You can add the feed to your RSS reader by bookmarking http://spfldbloggers.com/feed.php.

Marie deservers a lot of credit in starting the first sense of online community by creating the original Springfield bloggers list. I remember being first linked up as if it was an archived blog post. I was super excited because I thought that the rest of Springfield just used the interweb to check email and pimp out their MySpace page. Seriously.

I’ll have to continue with a part two… (I just fell asleep at my desk)

Slide of hand, viral marketing.

In an elaborate scheme, Molson and Lee pulled a fast one to fool the radio and blogging community into thinking they were getting tossed off the air by the efforts of a “blown out” blogger named Cyndi, only to announce they are starting a FM morning radio show on 97.7 Alice.

I still hate Cyndi. You should have seen the rebuttal I had typed up (delete).
