Secret Santa of Music.

BFS started it. Anon Com continued it.

Here’s my addition with my favorite songs of 2007 which were all from 2007. Go ahead, continue this meme. These are usually fun. You don’t have to post all YouTube videos like I did.

5. Data Rock - Data Rock - Fa Fa Fa

This song is fun with the funky beat and the simple guitar riff.

4. John Butler Trio - Grand Nationals - Funky Tonight

JBT has been close to my musical tone def ear for some time now. I had Sunrise Over Sea before it was released in the states. Grand Nationals is a great, but I favor Sunrise more. Still, this is a great album.

3. Radiohead - In Rainbows - Nude

Radiohead is one of those bands that when someone says I’ve got Kid A or Amnesiac… You do? Well do you like these bands… umm who? Well, everyone in my experience likes Radiohead. In Rainbows did not disappoint this year.

2. Avett Brothers - Emotionalism - Die Die Die

These guys are just freak’n incredible and I can’t believe I saw them play live in Springfield - friggin’ - Illinoise. Thanks goes out to Dennydeaton who pointed me in the direction of these fellows.

1. Arcade Fire - Neon Bible - No Cars Go

This is an album that I can listen to start to end, and then hit repeat. It’s a full album of great material. This is one band that I’d like to see live.

So, there you have it. My songs for 2007.

In Rainbows.

Just got the new Radiohead album, In Rainbows. It’s being distributed directly from the band from their website: http://www.inrainbows.com/. The band is asking their fans to name a price on the album. If you think it’s worth 10 bucks, you pay them 10 bucks. If you think it’s worth 2.50, you pay 2.50. You get the picture.
I’ve tried logging into the site to download it, but it’s down right now. I finally ended up downloading from a third party for free. I believe they are going to release a CD version, I’ll buy it then.

A lil bit crazy.

I think you need to be a little crazy to be considered a musical genius, or any other field/career.

Harry Caray of beats.

I came across Ronald Jenkees over on BoingBoing, he creates beats on a Korg Triton, but looks like Harry Caray with his huge Coke bottle glasses and squinty eyes. Even kinds of sounds like him. From the few videos I’ve watched, he is extremely talented and just seems like a guy that enjoys what he is doing. From his description on his website, he is self taught and plays by ear.

Just amazing.

One of those people you would more than likely never come across unless for the inter-tubes.

He even has a CD for sale. Might have to get this one.

Update: Too good to be true. Ronald Jenkees is the alter ego of a guy that use to go by the Big Cheez. Still dig the act though.

All of my love - Ween Edit.

Anon Com has got me on a Ween kick this afternoon, so with no further a-do I give him All of My Love, the YouTube video.

No one home.

What do you when no one is home?

Crank it up!

It’s a good thing the dogs don’t care.

Hip Hop Hooray.

I am the SH OO, hip hop hooray. Heard this song this morning on the way to work. A nice kick back to the 90’s. Actually, 93′.

Looks like the weekend is going to be beautiful. GTG has left me all by my lonesome. She flew out to Oklahoma City last night. So it’s just me and roommate Steve, and the dogs at the crib (throw’n some ill 93′ slang) this weekend. I have no idea what I am going to do.

The only thing I do have scheduled is to help GTG’s parental units move a couch because I have a truck. Other than that, maybe electrocute myself with some rewiring, or painting the stairwell, or heading down to Southern Illinois. I am an open palette this weekend.

Ya’ll page me, while I am chill’n in my Cross-Colours gear.

I am so white, it hurts.

Computer Camp Love.

Totally nerdy.

Bring it on back.

After three days of rockin’… we were dead tired and exhausted. Ed and Amanda, thanks for your hospitality and a great weekend filled with awesome music. We kind of got to party again like we were sexiest bartending duo of Springfield again. Or at least a come back tour. And we may’ve had a bit too much fun…

Rock Out.

Day 1 of Lollapalooza:

First of all, thanks to big chief Sterno for letting me stay at his crib last night and the private screening of the Simpson movie. Next time have the camera guy sit in the middle; still a great movie. Thanks again.

It’s one in the A M so I’m just going to jot down some of the particulars. Like you’d get complete sentences and correct grammar any other time. This should be fun to read in the morning.

Joined up with Ed around 1 this afternoon for Lollapalooza. This is sort of the chronological order of the bands we saw.

Bands…

Jack’s Mannequin - just a bunch of songs about girls that he once loved. I’ve only got one girl I love… and there is no d’ on that love. (insert gag moment here) Complete waste of a band, but it was the better one out of the few playing at that time slot.

M.I.A. - She started out strong, but then the set went to crap when she stopped in the middle of a song to demand the DJ to play it later. M.I.A. was the band that I was most curious about, but I’ll prefer now just to listen to the over produced studio tracks.

Slightly Stoopid - Whatever lingering smell of Sublime was still in the air - these guys puffed it down and owned it. It was the reggae induced rock beat that I hadn’t heard since “Santeria” was a hit. Music was so much better back in the day… like 96′.  The kids today have no idea.

Silversun Pickups - They played a smaller stage, but it was impossible to get a decent view with sun beating down and crowded mess of tattooed smelly people. I can confirm they what they sound like live is similiar to the cd.

The Rapture - We were actually on our way to see G Love & Special Sauce. Both Ed and I misinterpreted the band as the wrong one. It wasn’t till the closing of the show when they said that they were “Rapture from New York City” that we realized our mistake. They were fun. Definitely going to have to check them out later.

Daft Punk - If two guys didn’t have the cushiest jobs ever. They wore robot costumes, stood in a big giant pyramid, and one can assumed pressed the play button to start the show. What made up for it, as they were the closer tonight, was the huge display of choreographed lights and lcd screens. Of course I have video…

The closer.

Two AM, I am pooped from a long day of walking and rocking. Not going to say anything about the beating I took from Wii tennis…(cough -robbed) but it’s time for bed.

Palooza Top Bands

Top bands I want to see at Lollapalooza.

Daft Punk - Always have liked Daft Punk, even before my “techno” stage. It’s in the Windy City, maybe an appearance by Kanye West?

Muse - Black Holes And Revelations, the title of their last album; if that doesn’t just sound like they kick ass.

Amy Winehouse - I wonder if she is going to be totally drunk? She’s known for being blitzed. It’s almost part of the show.

The Roots - I’ve seen them once before with Ed. We saw them open for 311. Can’t wait to see them again.

Regina Spektor - Hottie Russian with a beautiful voice.

Lupe Fiasco - Believe he is a Chicago native. Raps about food, liquor, and skateboarding.
TV on the Radio - Like Radiohead, but it’s TV on the Radio.

Silverchair - If you were ever into ‘grunge’ (it’s like fingernails on a chalk board when I hear that label) then you had to be down with Silverchair. Come on’ “Frog Stomp” such an awesome song.

M.I.A. - I hear she is one crazy chick. Have to see what her lyrical styling is like live.

Silversun Pickups - Not related to Silverchair, but good.

Detachable but not professional.

Next weekend I am going to Lollapalooza, a huge three day concert festival in Chicago. I’ve been trying to determine if I can take my Canon Rebel XT dSLR to the festival. The website states:

Guests and their belongings are subject to search upon entry or re-entry. You can help keep the lines moving quickly by leaving large bags at home. Please return for any additions or amendments.

You may bring in the following items:
• Blankets
• Umbrellas (small hand-held style)
• Soft-sided coolers
• Baby Strollers
• Two factory sealed water bottles
up to 1 liter each
• Empty Camelback
• Binoculars
Non-professional equipment or
cameras without detachable lenses

Non-professional equipment OR cameras without detachable lenses. So, I emailed for more information and their reply:

This is the exact wording from the general info section of the website:

Allowed: Non-professional equipment or cameras without detachable lenses

Prohibited: Professional still camera equipment (no detachable lenses, no tripods, big zooms, or commercial use rigs).

We have determined that security will use “detachable lenses” as the specific determining factor between professional and non-professional. I hope this helps!

Sincerely,
Meghan with the Info Team

Okay, I have to say that I am stumped. Yes I can read that she says in the email “‘detachable lenses’ as the specific determining factor, but my camera is not at all “professional.” Or at least what I woulder consider a studio camera. Should I attempt to try to bring my camera which will probably be in a backpack with only one attached lens (a small lens at that)?

I am deeply torn by this and the fact that Amy Whinehouse is playing at the same time as Lupe Fiasco.

The Mountain Goats.

I found this band surfing through my MySpace friends and non-friends. Never heard of them before this, but I like it so far. Kind of a folk-punk sound. They’ve got a bunch of live shows in the Internet Archive. I am listening to one right now.

The video to the song that got me interested in them.

Anyone else heard of them before and have any recommendations about them?

Avett Brothers tonight.

Don’t know if the show is sold out or not, but the Avett Brothers play the Hoogland Center tonight at 8pm.

Road Trip Music

Personal note to myself: Stop writing in the middle of the night; especially, when on pain killers. Stick to posting YouTube videos.

GTG and I are leaving for a road trip this weekend. I’d tell you, but she is going to do the write-up tomorrow. You’ll have to wait till then to find out our destination.

As of now it’s about 12:15 am and I can’t sleep. My back is sore so I am waiting for some pain killers to take effect before I head back to bed. Sorry, if this post unintelligible readable (thank God for spell check) by the time I hit the post button.

GTG’s Dad is a man of music. Seriously. He has already hand picked the songs for the daughter-daddy dance and our first dance for our wedding. For the road trip I can’t tell you about (point your compass west) he put together 6 different mix cd’s with different themes. One CD dedicated to places: Example: Ray Charles - Georgia, John Denver - Rocky Mountain High… Lot’s of songs with New York, Chicago. Then two CD’s with rain as the theme. We won’t listen to those unless it rains - cross our fingers. One CD themed just for trains. The amount of different types of music and the time it took to put together is pretty incredible, but if you saw his collection it had to been no problem for him.

I haven’t listened to them yet or even looked at the track listing; their being saved for the drive.

This is what I’ve got on my list to listen to:

Cold War Kids - Robber & Cowards

I just picked this CD up yesterday. This is one where I saw the video for the main track and thought it looked pretty cool. The CD so far is about a 3.75 stars out of 5.

Comparable to Radiohead meets the Strokes.

The Avett Brothers - Emotionalism

I got this yesterday too. I bought it after I found out they were coming to Springfield. Denny has mentioned them before and they are one of his top 10 in his last.fm profile. I compared them to bluegrass meets grunge. GTG says they are another O.A.R. clone. She’s soooo wrong. This is a 4.5 out of 5 stars. I think this one will be on heavy repeat on the iPod.

Frank Black - Christmass

GTG actually bought this one for me. Frank Black is a former member of the Pixies… You know “Where Is My Mind” from Fight Club? This is an all acoustic album. He’s got a rough but melodic voice. Props to GTG for getting this one for me. And yes, there is a cover of “Where Is My Mind.” 3.5 out of 5.

Gym Class Heroes - As Cruel As School Children

I love the hip-hop, or at least the stuff that doesn’t repeat “this is why I’m hot, cause you not.” This is another one picked out by GTG, and before it was mainstream. This is definitely a sing-a-long cd. And a whole song about a MySpace friend request. Doesn’t get any deeper than that.

Mix Atmosphere with Maroon 5.

4 out of 5.

Anyone else got any recommendations?
