I Humzoo.

No, not that kind of hum-zoo. I realized the other day that I blogged zilch about Humzoo. Let me back up for a second, I forget that not everyone spends 3/4 of the day connected to the net. What is Humzoo? Well, Humzoo.com is a place to blog and upload photos for the world to see; and supposedly everything tastes like cake. It’s free and really easy to use.

Ok, now you’re asking, Aren’t there hundreds of other places on the net to do that? Yes, but this one is really easy and there’s a great community atmosphere. Best of all, one half of the creators is local digital Renaissance man Dave Heinzel. The other creator is Denny Deaton, a cool guy from the East Coast, that has two awesome wiener dogs. We like wiener dogs on Gotshoo.

So Shoo, where’s your Humzoo blog? Right here. Well, what about Gotshoo?, you going to move your blog over there too? I’ve thought about it, but I’ve got about four years of posts invested in Gotshoo and I use the site for development purposes, and I currently use my Humzoo blog to post geeky web findings and photos that don’t make the dailyphoto. So no, Gotshoo is here to stay.

What did Dave and Denny slip you a Lincoln to talk about Humzoo? No, but $5 bucks sounds pretty sweet right about now. I think Humzoo is a cool site and easy way to post content and photos to the web. It’s especially great for those in the last six months learned the term ‘blog.’

It’s free, go check it out!

A couple that blogs together…

stays together.

Mrs. Shoo has inked her way on to the inter-tubes and created her own blog. Add http://mrsshoo.gotshoo.com to your RSS reader.

And by the way… more sledding photos.

I took this just before everyone hit the hill. Talk about a one in a million shot!

More shots to follow.

International STARS!

I almost missed it!?! And actually my computer was suppose to record it, but pooped out. Luckily A/V wiz Dave Heinzel already has it on YouTube. I would write a welcome post to Gotshoo, but I’ve been up for two days straight. Don’t ask - I am headed to bed.

Skyler Duncan #1 Fan.

020, originally uploaded by gotshoo.

The Shoo household is a music household. We can’t sing, but GTG can play Guitar Hero. I came home tonight and Buddy was jamming to Skyler Duncan. I tried to talk to him and give him treats but he was all like, “Don’t even look at me, because you ruin Skyler’s sweet melodies by just being in the room.” I was lucky enough to snap a few photos only because he was so deeply entranced in the music.

He refuses to wear the head phones on his ears because he’s afraid of hurting his ear drums and affecting the quality of the music. Dogs have better hearing than humans anyway. He’s got the volume set on 3, it’s like 11 to him.

He’s a serious fan. We had to confiscate the iPod because he was having another trip out session.

Blog 2007.

Being the numbers guy - at least in my household - I was curious to how many posts hit spfldbloggers.com. Below - Not bad. I believe these numbers go back to December 12th 2006, when I finished the RSS feed fetcher, and end tonight December 30th 2007 around 10pm. Wow, 298 dog posts for Gotshoo… ok not all Dog posts.

I usually posted about improvements about the site here. You can check them all out here.

In a way, I feel like there is some sort of ‘community’ for bloggers in Springfield. I hired Dave Heinzel as my photographer for my wedding and had him as teammate for trivia night, I’ve done computer work for Marie, and shared drinks with Russ, Dan, John and Micah, and spotted this guy in Panera. Hopefully 2008 I’ll get to share more drinks with more bloggers. WhereIsDave, I’ll buy you some Natty Light.

Well, I hoped everyone enjoyed the run because I am pulling the plug…. No, no, no, to say the least. I still have a bunch more stuff planned. I might even throw on a new design.

So the question for 2008 - What would you (you as in me, unless you work for free) do to change Spfldbloggers?

Ohh by the way, if you’re feeling bored some night do me a favor and click the ad on the side. I’ve made $14.10 since May. I’m a long way from becoming a dot com millionaire.

Also, I want to send credit and a thank you to Marie who originated the first Spfldbloggers list. She did a lot of the foot work in getting the ball rolling.

I want to touch the iPod.

IMG_6039
Santa was pretty good to Mr. Shoo this year and left enough Best Buy gift cards and cash to be able to get an iPod Touch. The Touch is very similar to the iPhone except that it’s not a phone, doesn’t have an external speaker, and doesn’t have bluetooth capability. What it does have is Wifi, photo slideshow, a web browser, about 8GB of storage, and it’s thinner than an iPhone. Not too shabby.

First thoughts:

Unlike Dave and his iPhone, I can manually manage my music, videos, and play directly from the iPod. Dave, something I did find out is that there is a 3rd party utility to copy your music from an iPod to your iTunes library if you use the Jailbreak hack (more on that later).

One of the first things I tried out was the web browser. Just unbelievable how easy it is to use. The browser allows for full page viewing of websites as well as modified mobile versions. Google has some iPhone/touch optimized pages for gmail, search, and calendar. With a double tap of the finger one can easily zoom in and check out a portion of a webpage. Of course, I checked out http://m.spfldbloggers.com first - and of course, I found out I need to fix a few features.

A neat thing that I can do from my touch since I am connected to the Internet via wifi is buy music from the iTunes library. Last night I bought my first album from iTunes while laying in bed half awake. It was way too easy. I clicked buy, entered my password and immediately after that I was automatically downloading new tracks to my iPod. The album also included some bonus features so as soon as I synced back with iTunes, iTunes started downloading new videos. All way too cool!

Jailbreak

Jailbreak is the method to get 3rd party apps installed on an iPhone / Touch. There are 100’s of tutorials out there so I thought I give one a shot. One of the first steps is to downgrade the firmware to 1.1.1. In 1.1.1 there is an exploit in the web browser to allow access to the root of the system so it’s possible to install applications. The Jailbreak software uses this exploit and then patches it right away. More info here.

CrunchGear has the easiest tutorial so far.

I gave it a shot tonight. Really easy to do. I installed a few apps under the 1.1.1 version, but when I went to upgrade to 1.1.2 I didn’t get the pre-installer for Jailbreak installed correctly so it reverted back to the factory settings. Eventually, I’ll try it again because it’s possible to get the same functionality from the iPhone of Google Maps and Email for the Touch that’s not currently included with the Touch.

So why didn’t you just get an iPhone?

Honestly, because I was worried about dropping a device that I would have so much invested interest into and having to pay for extra fees for mobile internet. You wouldn’t believe, but ol’ Shoo can be a bit clumsy at times. The rumor is that by June there will be a new 3G version of the iPhone and the current version will be out of date. And I guess the biggest reason why I didn’t get one was because somewhere in the iPhone contract there is small print that I must get a new puppy for GTG. Well, that’s what she keeps telling me.

Worth it?

Of course you could buy a Zune and be perfectly happy, but you wouldn’t have a kick ass UI (user interface) or a full internet browser. Yes, it’s worth it if you have the moola.

Best Buy Tent City.

This post is late in coming, but hey, nothing like some left overs. Dave Heinzelhas an excellent podcast featuring people from the tent city outside of Best Buy this past Thanksgiving. I would expect that most Gotshoo readers frequent Dave’s site often, but by the slight chance you’ve missed it (there was an excellent Skyler Duncan podcast this week also):

The only time I’ve stood in line for Black Friday was almost 10 years ago when I purchased a $40 dollar 56k modem that with rebates only cost me $5 bucks. Back then I think you left the house at 6:30 am, not 12pm Thanksgiving Day as the early birds in the video.
