Well I did it. I finished my first ever Century. I’ve been working up to it since July putting on about 700 miles over the summer.
I started just a little past 7am. It was cloudy and overcast. After 11 the sun and clouds came out. When I see the white clouds against the blue sky I always think of the opening to The Simpson’s.
My route would take me through Auburn, Divernon, Glenarm, and Virden. At one point I was riding on Old Route 66 which was still all brick. Not the smoothest part of the ride.
There was a point where I didn’t see anyone else for over an hour. It was cool. I was in the middle of the country with nothing but corn.
Physically, it was one of the hardest things I’ve done. Six hours and ten minutes riding time. After a few pain pills, a beverage or two, and a back massage I am starting to feel relaxed.
Okay - what next?

Way to go.
Congratulations Shoo.
What next? I would say a couple of fine beers. You’ve earned it.
HURRAY!!!!! WELL DONE!
Great job! Sounds exactly like my experience a couple of years ago. On that last loop before heading home, I didn’t see anyone until I got close to Auburn. You beat my time by about fifteen minutes though. So it’s ON next year! Oh yeah.
Great Job! I knew you could do it.
What’s next?…Well there’s a century ride the 3rd week of August each year in Texas called ‘Hotter than Hell Hundred’….interested?
Congratulations, Shoo. Awesome!
Well done, Shooey!
Nice job, dude. Maybe one of these days we can get together and ride in the woods. Not for a 100 miles, though.
Hooray! I’m proud of you! I must say, 700 miles= trim wasteline. Maybe I should start biking…
Nice! If I tried that, I’d be twittering ‘help….’ after mile 15.
@Jeff - For real. Now only if we could get schedules to line up.
@Jessie - Your wedding is one of the reasons I hoped on the bike this year.
@Dave - Bring it, dude. My goal next year is to have a riding partner. It helps that you take turns drafting and you keep your momentum going when someone else is challenging you.
Congrats Shoo. That’s huge….
@Christa - Your comment was stuck in spam land, sorry. Hotter-than-hell-hundred? Sounds like I might need to put some more miles on the bike and invest in some sun screen.
Congrats Shoo! First 100 miles…next cross country!
@Jeremy - If I only I had the vacation time.
