DIY gone crazy.
GTG is getting ready to paint what is the currently the office. In the future it will be her dressing room since the bedroom is so small. We’ve known underneath the carpet that there were hardwood floors, but we weren’t sure of the quality, so we pulled a corner up tonight. We’re going to remove the carpet once she gets the room painted.
Floor looks great and just needs a little work removing whatever gunk is still left. I feel confident that the rest of the floor will look as great seeing that there is a layer of padding underneath. If it is not in the best condition we’re going to throw an area rug over it.
Anyone have experience with hardwood floors?

Advice. If you’re going to do any sanding, start out in the corner and use a small hand sander. Horror story. Not my own, but one I witnessed. The person rented one of those large upright push sanders. Turns out the floors were not actually hardwood, but a very pretty soft wood. The sander went through the wood to the underflooring in about a second and a half. It was just devastating.
I’ve used one of the big sanders before. The probelm we ran in to was that the stain was bad, and it took like 16 coats. Then it started coming up 2 weeks later. So make sure your stain is good would be my only advice… It’s good though cuz hardwood makes small rooms look a lot bigger. I’m a big fan.
I don’t think we’ll have to do any refinishing besides scrapping what gunk is left on the floor. Should be fine as long as there are no hidden stains.
You just need to skim the floor not sand it. The have machines that you can rent that do that.
I agree Jager. Especially if all you want to do is get the spots off the floor. You guys are all about the DIY. I’m very impressed.
