Off topic Friday.

I’ll be updating throughout the day.

New blogs and RSS stuff.

Spring is in the air and so are new local blogs.

First of all, the SJ-R now has feeds to their Front Page news, City/State news, Opinion, Sports, Marketplace, Food, Arts & Entertainment and Outdoors. Jason, you should put your OE blog feed on Spfldbloggers.com. Email at gotshoo AT gmail DOT com; if you’d like to be put on the list or anyone else at the SJ-R.

Dog gone tired.

I am working on some “work-work” right now and the dogs are passed out as I slave away on the computer.

When we went to the APL we brought in a sample of the fabric from the chair in the picture, and requested our dogs be that color. Pretty good color match.

This is also dedicated to SternO whom loves puppy pics in the morning!

Get more done.

Some friendly nerd tips from Shoo.

  • 7-Zip - A free open source zip program that handles zip, war, rar, and pretty much any other type of compression format. Very fast and is free. Works like a champ http://www.7-zip.org/
  • Virtual PC 2007 - Want to try out Linux without repartitioning or wiping out Windows or connect to a VPN without losing a local connection? I use it on a daily basis and love it. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/virtualpc/default.mspx
  • Google Docs - On a school computer, or visiting a friend’s house but don’t want to drag around a USB stick? Save your docs to Google, make changes, let others make changes. Very cool, very free. http://docs.google.com/
  • XXCopy - Need to move a lot of files and can’t trust Windows to do the job? XXCopy isn’t totally free, but does a heck of a job of indexing the files that need to be copied, creating a progress bar of what is copied, and spiting out a report of what was done. I moved 2.1 million (approx 120 GB) files last weekend without a hitch. http://www.xxcopy.com/index.htm
  • Process Explorer -  Need to dive deep into the processes of a Windows machine? What program is hogging the memory? Who’s got this file open? Very good diagnostic tool and free. http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/ProcessExplorer.mspx

Dog Watching

Dog Watchin'

We finally found the dog park. Made a trip out there on Sunday. More photos will be up later tonight.

Stump removal.

No, we’re not for hire.

IMG_1638

Roommate Steve helped me extract the rest of the stumps from the front of the house this afternoon. It was one of those “extended” projects that got put on hold from last summer. Although he looks like a pansy in the picture above, Steve was a tremendous help and I owe him dinner.

I think I am just going to plant rocks in place of the stumps.

This is Phil.

This is Phil. Many of the Gotshoo readers may recognize Phil from the past. I went to middle and high school with Phil. Even after high school I still managed to run into him at parties at U of I, or trips to SIU. He’s super smart, and just an all around cool guy. He got his masters (I believe) in computer science at U of I. From there, the big dot coms lassoed him out to the West coast to work as a full fledge nerd.

He would make it back to Central Illinois to visit the family around Christmas or Thanksgiving and joke that he was saving his money so that he could backpack across Central America. Actually, he was dead serious about backpacking.

Around Christmas Thanksgiving last year I saw him downtown at the bar. We shared a drink and I congratulated him that he was taking the leap to backpack across strange countries. I didn’t hear anything about Phil till around February when Kyle posted a link on his blogroll. I’ve been following his adventures and photos since then.
Check it out. Really a good read when you are stuffed between three fabric covered walls.

Beer drinking dog.

You may, or may not know this, but Buddy loves his beer. He kept tugging at my leg during the St. Pattys Day parade, so I had to give him a little. Good thing his paws are too short to drive.

Crack of the bat.

Just Two Guys and The 26th Man have me wanting a cold brew and a foot long hot dog.

Update: Betsy just sent a link over of a guy who reviews ball parks. Here’s his review about Lanphier Field. Also, she has her own take on Lanphier Field. Side note: Betsy has worked at the Baseball Hall of Fame, Swing of the Quad Cities, and the Daytona Cubs. I consider her my personal expert on minor league baseball.

How about instead of taking off 10 mins of my drive to the I-72 on-ramp (see MacArthur extension), we use that money to build a new Springfield baseball stadium? LRS Field, Bunn Stadium? There are plenty of local companies for corporate sponsorship. I bet someone is just aching to flip the bill to plaster their sponsorship on score boards, souvenirs, and ball gloves.

Remember the TV 20 / Dr. Pepper gloves that they used to give out? I had mine for years and so did my neighbors.

Actually, let’s keep the MacArthur extension and still build a new stadium. I still think it is unbelievable that I’ll be able to get on the interstate from MacArthur.

Best example is O’brien Field in Peoria.

The 26th Man has it right:

In order to be financially viable, a team today needs things like luxury boxes and multiple concession stands, souvenir stands and bathrooms. Which is why Springfield needs a new stadium.

The guys are saying that the stadium should be built downtown. That sounds great, but where would you put it, and what would you tear down?

What if it were off the Hazel Dell frontage road near the 6th Street exit? Right about here.

If I only had the money.

Life update.

Tired Pup

Lately, it has been dog overload on Gotshoo, so I’ll make a quick update and write about geek stuff or something like that. The dogs are getting along much better. Oddly, Buddy has matured and can be trusted to stay in the living room by himself while I am at work. GTG and I took them for a walk in Washington Park today. After a full loop they were both pooped. Yes, GTG was right, two are better than one.

Geek stuff. Actually, I’ve been busy so I haven’t been able to do geek stuff. Wait.I do have Ubuntu (linux) loaded on my laptop. Did it about two weeks ago. I was attempting to try something other than Windows for a while, but there is still a learning curve while trying to figure out how to install stuff like drivers or updates on software. Looks like I am going to throw XP back on there. Hey, I tried.

Broke Back Mountain Bike Riding as it been kindly adorned by GTG and Amanda has not happened much lately. I think I made it out last week, but haven’t done anything recently because I’ve been playing with the dogs. I aiming for Sunday to do some riding. Anyone want to go? I promise not to wear spandex.

Yup, life’s good.

You got another one.

One Bud wasn’t enough. We had to go with a Bud-Light (according to Sterno).

Ya, we got another dog. GTG was convinced that Buddy was living a depressed solo life without a buddy. She’s been working on me for months for another dog. I avoided and ignored as much as possible. We even made two trips to the APL; each time with me giving an excuse why we could’t get another dog.

We were at the parade downtown last Saturday and the APL happened to be one of the groups passing by. GTG reports back to me after they pass by that there is a puppy just like Buddy in the parade. I smile and nod and somehow agree to visit the APL later on in the afternoon. Buddy was with us during the parade so he tagged along to meet the pup.

When we arrived GTG told the attendant that we were there to see a tan colored pup. She responded, “Ohhh, you mean Clancy,” the rest of the room echoed the same sentiments. Clancy was led out of his room after just waking up from a long nap. He had walked the whole way through the parade.

First thing that popped into my mind when I saw him was ’spider monkey.’ His legs were just as about as long as his body.

They told us that he was a Cocker-Spaniel - Daschund mix. It’s difficult to explain why we’re fans of the daschund hybrid.

Since Buddy was with us, he got to sniff around and see how he liked the dog. He approved.

We waited till Sunday to pick up Clancy because we had to bring in Buddy’s vet records to show them that he was up to date on his shots.

When the dogs first met - it was an obvious challenge to see who was the alpha dog. Buddy has about twenty pounds on four pound Clancy, but Clancy has razor sharp baby teeth and is just a little taller than Buddy. They’ve been going at eachother for the last day, but this evening they’ve seemed to find some kind of cease fire. They’re passed out on GTG as I am typing this.

They’ll play for a while but then one or the other will get a little too aggressive and ears and tails will get snipped at. So they’re adjusting, but after a week I assume everything should be fine.

Getting to know eachother.

Lil' Bro and Big Bro

I snapped this at lunch today. The dogs are getting along just fine; needless regardless what the photo looks like.

I’ll post more tonight.

For Sterno…

The staff here at the gotshoo.com has been made aware of some complaints regarding photographs published on a daily (sometimes twice-daily) basis. The photos in question feature the subject–a one Buddy Shoo–engaging in a variety of activities. Apparently some viewers think that these photographs have detracted from the gotshoo appeal.

So, we have a new photograph subject for your viewing pleasure.

Ladies and Gentlemen, introducing, Clancy Shoo!! The newest addition to the staff here at gotshoo.com.

IMG_1477

We here at the gotshoo.com will try to vary our puppy photography, switching between the two dogs…in some cases, we may feature both at the same time…

Wow!!

Just wanted to assure you that here at gotshoo.com, we aim to please. Let us know how we can further enhance your web-viewing pleasure.

Thanks,

The staff at gotshoo.com

Unexpected exception.

This week has been back to school week. I am in class brushing up and being taught the latest in object oriented programming with Visual Studio .Net 2005. The teacher has been awesome. He’s funny, knowledgeable, and relates the concepts to real world activities. Us geeks, like to make fun of the DBAs and end-users of the programming world.

Oddly enough, my fellow classmates are all from the state agency that I interned at right out of college. The guy next to me asked my old boss about me and said the guy was even able to pronounce my last name. Wow! Didn’t know I left that much of a lasting impression. I spent most of my time waiting for things to do.

I even rethought some of the stuff I’ve done in PHP in how that I could use it better by using object oriented programming. It has always been one of those things that I just write code from start to finish, but if I had thought a few steps ahead of myself I could create a structure that would not only allow me to manipulate data, create search, find, update functions but turn around and use the code for the same data in a different fashion.

I’ve been like in nerd heaven all week. OMG.

What’s cool about Visual Studio .Net is that you can write in any type of code supported (C#, C++, Visual Basic - I think there are 43 languages supported) and you’ll use the same libraries to write methods to interact with databases, send emails, or even logging and they’ll be the same in any language you choose. The only thing that is different is the syntax. You can even have a Visual Basic program talking to a C# program with ease because each application is compiled and wrapped in the .Net module and then turned into machine code.

What is also cool is that when building an application now it doesn’t matter if it is a Windows app or a website the only thing that is going to be different is the UI (user interface), as long your business (logic that manipulates and finds the data) and data (logic that interacts with the database provides code to interact with the SQL server) layers are built correctly.

Like I said - nerd heaven.

It’s nice to change it up and absorb new information and drink free Mountain Dew for a week.

Puppy nap.
