I understand where you're coming from Dave. I was always the brat that was mad when my dad got cash, and was wishing everyone sent him homemade goodies. To me it's all about generosity and celebrating the season. I like letting people know that I appreciate what they do for me. Anyhoo, I hope everyone on gotshoo has an absolutely wonderful holiday and a very merry christmas.
Allie- I love the term "refuse removers." Good stuff. I made them bread and taped it to the lid of the garbage can.

On the morning of the ice storm I spent a long time helping a bus driver whose car was stuck in the ice as he was trying to get to work. Even if he would have made it to work, he would not have gotten tipped. Also not receiving tips were the many emergency response personnel and utility crews deployed across the city. Electricians don't get tips. Meter readers don't get tips.

I tip waiters because their compensation depends on tips. I also tip other service providers because it is 'expected,' but I don't necessarily agree with the practice of tipping some service providers and not others.

Appreciating one's services and handing them cash on the side are not one and the same. Now excuse me while I take out the trash and slide a twenty under the handle...

The waiters get paid... Do you tip them? Do you tip the person that cuts your hair? The bell-hop (is that what they're still called?) that carries your bags to your hotel room? I'm just saying that people such as your mail man or trash men might do more than you realize. For example, the day of the ice storm, as I was calling in to work, my dad was on the road at 4 AM to begin sorting mail. He drove around on solid sheets of ice all day and didn't get home til after 7:00 that night. Is that what your work day was like? I'm just saying... Guess I'm just one of those old fashioned people that enjoy letting people know I appreciate what they do for me. Dave, I'm not sure what you do, but if you've ever helped me out in any way, let me say that I thank you profusely, and appreciate what you do. :)

I saw the trash can right away and couldn't figure out what it was doing there.

Our trash "humans" left a card last week, and I think they left it in the place that they expect to find tips - in the rear hinge of the blue garbage bin lid. I worry about putting out a tip and letting cash sit all night on the side of the street. What hoodlum wouldn't take advantage of a street lined with cash tips in a very easy to find location?

This is another one of those situations where I don't believe tips should be expected. Yes, I understand that they come to your house and take away your trash, but don't they also get a paycheck? I get a paycheck, deal with the public and don't get tips.
