Free Wifi.

The Lace’ is now advertising free wifi? Tried to get a pic, but the camera phone didn’t cut it.
I am sorry, but I don’t think it will cut it as a place to work.

GTG, I am going to the Lace to do some work.

I thought you were going to Starbucks.

No, just not my kind of place anymore, and they charge for wifi. I wanna get a drink, listen to some trashy music, maybe bust out the robot, and finish some code for work. See ya later.

Lace = Chantilly Lace.

SOOOOOOOoooOOOOOOooOO

I stole this from Taly’s Facebook.

Fall.

Yesterday it was just warm enough to hit the trails. I met up with Daryl and we biked the trails off of Woodside road.

Note to self: Marshmallows before a ride are not always the best nutritional snack. That, and they do weird things to your stomach if you haven’t rode in a while.

Brainstorm.

Okay, I am ready to do a new podcast, but I do not know what direction to go with…

In the queue of ideas:

1. Mountain Biking with Shoo - Fade in’s and out’s of me riding by bike, killer 80’s music in the background, jumping some hills.. Maybe a crash or two. And helmets.
2. Nerd-alert! Windows Vista demoed for the masses.

3. Boy-o-Buddy - Montage of Buddy tearing things up and playing fetch. This is a given. These come periodically.
4. Springfield Nightlife - A look at downtown Springfield for those who don’t get out during the weekends.

5. Other.

World Series.

I’ve been judging speech competitions and celebrating a World Series victory, so I haven’t had much time to blog. Yes, the Cardinals are now the World Series Champions. Which sounds weird because the only other country in the MLB is Canada. But alas, they are the World Series Champions.

It was great to see the Cardinals win it. I didn’t think they would go all the way, and the majority of the fans would have counted them out as well in September. They were truly the underdog that came out on top.

What’s different between 04′ and the 06′ World Series? Obviously a trophy, but the whole team was in it to win. Pitching with Suppan, Weaver, Carpenter. Batting with Eckstein, Molina, and Rolen.

It was great to see Eckstein get MVP and a brand new ZO5 Corvette. The back story on Eckstein is that during the 06′ season he was still driving his parents Ford Contour. The Vette would be his first real car!

I wish I could have been there, but it was great to see my team win it!

Blowin’ stuff up, watchin’ the game, drinkin’ a cold one.

Tonight was a nice relaxing game. I put the finishing touches on a side project (out of work) that I had been working on for months. Okay, maybe there were some interruptions in those months like moving, taking a few trips, seeing a few baseball games. For now, it is done till they break it.

Talking about baseball, Cardinal haters warm up those comment fingers, the Cards take another from Detroit. They now lead the series 3-1. If you have been paying attention to the stats they keep throwing out on ESPN, out of the 3 times the Tigers and Cardinals have met in the World Series, the team that wins game 4 - loses the series. They even brought up that the last time St. Louis was ahead 3-1 in the WS was in 1985 with the Royals, and the Royals came back to win the series.

I thought you were a Cardinal fan? Why all this negative stats talk?

Why? Because I don’t believe that stats and beer sales control the game. And that the tickets for tonight’s game were for Game 5. Game 4, going by what was printed on the ticket will be played tomorrow because of Wednesday’s rain out. I do believe in a higher power though.

During the game, I also loaded Windows Vista Ultimate on my laptop. The 64bit version. It took me a while to determine if I could install the 64bit version. I have a Athlon 64bit processor, but the whole time I had been running the 32bit version of XP Home. It worked.

The OS feels like the first time you date someone. They look hot, but everything is awkward and not everything is cohesive. Vista is definitely graphic intensive. A lot has been done with the integration of multimedia. It ran a little sluggish at times on my laptop and had a horrible time streaming recorded tv shows from my desktop. Again though, it is a beta. I think it will bring some of the spotlight back to the pc which has been outshined lately by the Mac and its OS.

Beer. Tonight I had a Boulevard Pale Ale. Excellent. A-, the Fat Tires are still sitting in the fridge. I am waiting for something special… Maybe game 5 4?

A give-me.

K, you ask what am I doing this weekend?

Friday night I am planning to make an appearance at Josh’s party, as well as, try to meet up with John R. and see Nil8’s Hobgoblin Spookadelic. I haven’t been to in one in over three years.

But here’s the real kicker for the weekend.

My GF, the wonderful GTG who teaches English, co-sponsors student counsel, and assists the speech team, has hog tied  imprisoned graciously volunteered me to be a judge at a speech competition.

At first, I thought this would be great, go see some high school kids do a little improv / drama. It will only be a few hours. Great, no problem my sweet gf.

No. no. The critical information was filtered to me in bits and pieces… 1. We have to be at the school by 5am, 2. We have to take a bus to Peoria!, 3. It will last all day!!!

I don’t know if I was suckered into the situation, or GTG is just lucky that she has a BF who is willing to put up with a day of HS kids and bus trips to Peoria. I don’t know.

I figure I can get a guys weekend out of this.

Firefox 2.0

Firefox has released version 2.0 and it is packed with a bunch of goodies. I just downloaded it today. I haven’t had time to dig through all the features, but here are some that make it worth the upgrade.
spellcheck.jpg

Spell Check. Spell check right from where you are posting online. Very cool. Why did it take so long to add this as a feature? Now how about a grammar check?

When you click the orange satellite feed icon, you are taken to a page that offers choices in where to bookmark your feed.
feed choices.jpg

The defaults are Bloglines, MyYahoo, and Google Reader. I’ve been using a plugin called Sage to keep track of my feeds. I assume there is some interoperability with customizing it with Choose Application.

  • If you crash Firefox or enter a wicked bad site, it will save all your information (tabs, sessions, ect..) so when it boots up it will act like nothing happened.
  • Tabs are a little friendlier with close buttons on each tab. If you get a huge amount open, you can now scroll left to right through them.
  • If your computer is a little slow, you can limit how much ram FireFox will consume.

Of course, there’s more to it than this. Checkout Lifehacker and their guide.

I want you to blog me.

What-a-week! The Starbucks lady set the tone for the rest of the week, for sure. I haven’t been able to keep up with myself, needless to say, my girlfriend, house, dog, or this blog.

GTG caught my sickness from last week and has been miserable with a stuffy head. I’ve tried to make it up to her by making a late night delivery bringing her cough drops, chocolate milk, and NyQuil. Not even the Cardinals pushing ahead with 5-0 victory last night could cure her stuffiness.

My house is a mess. Just plain and simple. (Mostly contained in the kitchen)
Buddy… that dog. He was wired like Frankenstien last night. He was behaving oddly the whole night. Not able to sit still for more than 30 seconds and barking at everything within a 30′ radius. I later discovered that he was poppin’ pills. He had tore open a package of cold pills. Must have had the doggy sniffles. Well, he took one too many and was up till 3am! And guess who was up with him? Me. I am draggin’ tail today - that’s why. BTW, he is doing fine, pills finally wore off.

I have sat down 5 other times this week to write some kind of post. Each time: delete.

An open letter to Starbucks.

Dear Overly Enthusiastic Starbucks Lady,

I think it’s wonderful that you are busting at the seams with happiness and joy. I am not a morning person. Let me repeat this. I am not a morning person. I enter your fine establishment for an over priced grande non-fat latte because it makes me bearable in the morning.

Each time you shriek “Good Morning” when someone comes in, while holding a strong bravado on the “ing” of “Morning”, I want a bottle of advil and a jack & coke.

Further words of advice, I think your coworker “Alex” (which I heard his name a dozen times from you) does not require you to repeat his name every three seconds. I think it would drastically improve your work relationship if you cut down the number of references to him.

Now that the latte is kicking in I am feeling bad about this post. So I will sum it up this way… You are at about a 11 let’s turn it down to 3.

Disgruntled Latte Drinker,

Shoo

Just like the pro.

Caught a half dozen other bass besides this 18″ beauty.

It was a great day to be on the lake!

World Series BABY!

I wish I could post something more than the Cardinals are going to the WORLD SERIES! But alas, my stuffy snot head can’t think of anything more than “WORLD SERIES!”

Buddy Mess

When I am away and Buddy has the backyard to himself, he likes to bring a collection of his favorite things to the back porch. If you examine the picture you will find a bone, bottle cap, dirt, roots, steel wool (I have no idea where he found that), his monkey, and other undentifiable items.

That dog.

The Future of Rock and Roll

WOXY, a terestial turned online indie radio station that thought it had cashed all its chips because lack of funding. The internet station is once again online, now funded by online cd trading service LaLa.com.

WOXY is an online source that I used to listen to religiously, especially through college. Over the past year I weened away from it because they had wavered from advertisement funding to full pledge drives and user funding. So every hour you’d be reminded to sign up and support.
But now they are back online playing a great selection of music that is not commonly heard over the airwaves. I’ve picked up on artists like Spoon, M.I.A., Painc! At The Disco (before they were big), Sufjan Stevens. I am tuning back in. Check em’ out.

Another weekend.

I am avoiding the ball game for a blog post as of right now. Was not looking pretty. Yes, I am being poor sport, but I am in my own house and not at the game.
I bought a hay bail and pumpkins this weekend to bring my house up to code for Halloween. Seems like everyone else had corn stalks, pumpkins, reindeer a skeleton, or other Halloween/autumn items proudly displayed. When I was buying the pumpkins all I could think was how big of a splatter some zit-faced teenager could get out of the pumpkin, and how jealous I would be because I couldn’t do it myself. So tough being a grown-up.

Buddy has developed a new bad habit. He has a fascination of chasing cars down. It happened two times this weekend. Sarah backed up and pulled out of my driveway unaware that 14lb Buddy was charging on all fours to keep up with her and the car. I am yelling at the Dog and Sarah (GTG), waving my hands; nothing out of both of them. Thankfully he only goes a few houses down before he gives up. Afterwards, when I try to round him up, he thinks it is a game of Catch Me if You Can!

The Daveheinzel.com is full of excitement with Dave documenting everything about his new baby girl. I swear he is only having kids so he can proliferate Daveheinzel.com. Ethan will be the coder/photographer and Mia will handle graphic design and illustration. All I can do with Buddy and Gotshoo? is get him to lick the screen. Congrats Dave & Courtney on a beautiful baby girl!

Preview for the week: Getting over a cold still, hope to kill it with vitamins and OJ. Got to get in the gym. Ordering books from Amazon. Catch season closer for Flavor of Love II.
