Dave, thanks for the unsolicited homeowners advice. I hope I have done my homework enough to avoid your closing cost shock. I've been lucky to have a friend that is a finance major and work at a bank to help me go over my loan, and the bank I've been working with has, from my experience, explained the costs and fees out to the T. But that all remains to be seen on Monday.

Get ready for some unsolicited homeowners advice.

I'm not sure how it will work for you, but Illinois National Bank screwed us over when it came time to close on the house. After being told repeatedly that there would be no closing costs (or maybe at worst about 200 bucks), they told us ONE DAY before closing that the closing costs would be over 1000.

Banks suck, but it's a short lived suckiness because right after signing your life away, you'll get the keys to your house, go over to it and stand in the empty house thinking 'what next?' That's one of the neatest moments of home ownership - the first evening.

We opted to paint all of our walls the color of a McDonalds Chocolate Milkshake. It's a light neutral that looks really good with white trim, and after over a year, it's not at all botheting us. On the other hand, I painted the garage green, and after just 6 or 7 months, I'm ready to change it.

I think there's probably a formula out there that says that the brighter or more bold the color is, the quicker you'll get tired of it.
