A lot of buzz on the net lately has been the ability to run Windows XP on the new Intel Macs. There was a contest to see who could get XP to run first on a Mac for 13 grand; that was completed. A few weeks later Apple announces that it is including an official add-on that will aid the user in loading XP, so no need to perform a complicated hack. After Apple announced the add-on, officially named “Boot Camp” - clever one Jobs, their stock rose 10% afterwards. And I just saw an article, which I can’t locate the link right now, that a company has developed a solution to run Windows programs natively in OS X.
Dell has requested the ability to put OS X on their machines. Apple’s reply, no.
I have not been a huge fan of Apple, but I am starting to teeter on the edge of liking to maybe one time considering. Not really in the position of needing another PC. I built a P4 3.4Ghz this past December, and my AMD64 3200 laptop is about a year and half old. But I wouldn’t mind.
What gets me about Apple is their sexiness. Yes, sex. From the iPod to the Newton iTunes. The appeal to have and want is so high. Partially because demand is far greater than supply. Apple only commands 4% of the computer
market while they control almost 90% of the MP3 player market. With so much power of the MP3 market, they’ve transpired the iPod as a gateway product to their “empire” of OSes and computer hardware.
This is all marketing though. Or is it?
I was ransacking Panera for free internet and caffeine not too long ago. The ratios of glowing apples to your general laptop was 7 to 3.
So informal survey. Would you part ways with the PC world? Or would you consider some kind of bilingual setup with OS X and XP? Or the hype hasn’t gotten to you, or you are the hype?

Shoo-
If only you had added a ‘y’ to the end of nerd - you would have had a far better title for this post…an homage to Poison. Oh well, next time try to bring the wit.
As for your survey - I’ve owned Macs and will probably own more, but as long as I’m in IT, there’s no getting away from PCs.
Russ, the IRS took my wit from last me. It was all I had left.
hmm, shooey, maybe if you hadn’t waited until the last minute to do those taxes…
and we all know that i
My mom is a graphic artist, and had always used a Mac, and loves them. Therefore imparting an affection for Macs to me.
She is using a PC in her current graphic arts related position, and curses them daily.
I agree with Russ. If you’re in IT, or a non-electronic-media position, it’s all PC for you.
But if you’re into shooting/editing videos, creating publications or mixing music, Mac is the way to go.
In other words, if you have any shred of creativity left in you, Go Mac.
Did you fix your enter button?
Let’s try it.
Enter Once.
Enter Twice.
Hm… A little better… But not there yet.
Macs all the way!
Well, I know it’s probably a foregone conclusion which side of the fence I’M on with this topic, but to take it one step further…
When the new macbook pro made it’s debut back in February, I wanted to buy one that same afternoon. I held off, and although I still have to fight back the urge to break out the plastic and buy one everyday, I remind myself of a few items that I have to have resolved before I buy one.
1) Adobe’s Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign) will NOT be intel native for about a year. A YEAR. The whole point of buying the high end macs is for superior graphic software running smoothly and efficiently in a nice encasing.
2) The next revisions will hopefully take care of the issues that the early adopters have been having with their intel books- Screen imperfections, fan noise, etc
3) Who the heck knows how fast the high end macbooks will be by Spring 07 when CSIII comes out? Not to mention the next OSX version…Panther…Tiger…Tomcat? Fat Tabby?
Yeah, I’m a mac user. But I’m the first to admit that their premium pricing kills me when I have to buy apple.
Stern, there’s really no good words to describe your crazy-nerdiness. I’m honestly in shock. Not sure what to say right now… So I’ll just say that I miss you and hope you weren’t that crazy when I used to hang out with you… Hoping Chi-town made you that way.
Hey, what can I say-
I used to despise macs when I was in my (first) undergrad. Always freezing up on me when I was a paragraph away from finishing my all nighters, and killing me in general.
I don’t go around preaching computer geek speak, but I know enough about the design software to have a pretty geeked-out conversation about it.
Additionally, when I’m thinking about plunking down $3K on a laptop, I do my research. Sue me.
I’m still a wild animal when I go out…but hey-I have to know my shit if I want to make it in my field.
