I am in Chicago / Arlington Heights this weekend. I am tagging along with GTG and 5 of her student council students. They’re in a conference all day while I am in the lobby using the free internet working on a side project. Same side project that I have been working on for the last few weeks. I am hoping to get it done soon (as well as my client). It’s driving me bonkers. I need my weekend time back!
I am using a blog break to relax from the project for a bit.
I wish you guys were nerds. I’d tell you how I made my life easier on this project. Okay, too bad, my blog. You can ignore this one.
First, I enabled access to my home network from the internet. In other words, I can remote into my computer at home, grab files, print stuff, or lock my roommate out of the internet (that was actually GTG’s idea).
I have to insert about 30mb of data into a database from 8 different files. I can’t run the program to insert the data from all 8 files at once, neither can I insert all the data I need from one file at one time. That means I have to run the program multiple times just to get all the data out. Can’t even run multiple instances of the program or it will lock up the web server. Time consuming!
This is what I did. I created a temporary table in the database to hold the name of the file that needs to be executed, data that needs to be inserted into the database, and if it completely executed. Next, using my computer from home, I set the Window’s scheduler to open the program at a timed interval to execute the code. Bam. It does the work without me needing to lift another finger.
Completly nerdy. But it helps me get this thing finished that much quicker.
(GTG’s voice echoing in the back of my head: “You’re such a nerd!”)
I’ll have better posts later on. How can you go with 5 HS students and their advisor to downtown Chicago without a story?

shoo, what in the world is wrong with you?! you’re such a nerd!! gah!! you’re on a fieldtrip to chi-town, and all you can blog about it geekdom?
remember that whole audience awareness thing?
Shoo,my mom linked to your blog from mine. She asked me if “that shoo person is always so technology-y.” She thinks you are funny.
Shoo, I think it’s wonderful that you’re a nerd. Sometimes, I feel good about myself cuz your nerdiness makes me look cooler. But then I feel bad sometimes because you’re so much smarter than me, when it comes to computers and such that is. I think it’s cool that we all have our own little talents….
Being a nerd is cool. I am sure that Shoo knows how to do all sorts of stuff that would make life easier!!
But importantly, The Cubs and Cards are starting the 2006 National League Campaign out in style. Last I checked the Cubs were up over the Reds 16-7 and the Cards were over the Phillies 13-2.
It is going to be one hell of a season!!! I can’t wait until this weekend when the Cards make the 5 hour drive north and face the Cubbies in the Friendly Confines!!!
I understood everything. What’s the big deal? (I’m a nerd too, sadly.) Shoo, our kind needs to stick together so we can make people uncomfortable at parties!
I’ll be in the corner with my iPod at the next party. See you there Soundchick.
