Lunch Time Blog

Nothing too interesting has been happening this week… excuse me … GTG is an official high school English teacher. 4-real. Congrats to her!

GTG school stories are much more interesting than my “took 15 emails before we got the thing fixed” rants. Last night she told me of a student who had submitted a complete essay copied directly from the Internet. Yes, copied. The killer was that it wasn’t even one of those ones you buy. Just a free, do a Google search, cut and paste essay.

Unbelievable… In hindsight, I copy others people work all the time. But I guess computer programs don’t necessarily fall under that stipulation.

Question: Rules from your yesteryears, would they pass this day in age?

Auto post on now.

I see that GTG is requesting a new post.

Although, I should be in bed sleeping and dreaming about my hot girlfriend and nerd things. (Yes, nerd things and hot girlfriend go hand in hand.) I am going to hammer out another blog post because Lord knows that my friends have no idea what I do.

This past Thursday I took GTG out for a nice dinner. I got the ribeye that was cooked at an excellent medium rare and GTG got the Mahi-Mahi. Muy delicious!

Friday, not to be out-done by Thursday, I was hankering for a buffet. My early years were spent growing up on the North-side of Springfield. I think this is where this hunger for buffets came from. So I recommend the “Maverick”. I am thinking good hot rolls, excellent dessert bar, and a great deal on dinner.

Stop the truck because sweat pants are half off at Walmart!

Now I should have learned from Dave Heinzel’s Podcast #2 (that’s a free plug Dave) that while attending the attire requires at least one article of NASCAR memorablia to be worn. Dinner was okay… and we got our mints. But as GTG and I ran to the door, an image was burned into my retinas that I can only vaguely describe in broken English.

Woman… two chairs… big… corn dog… dipping… in… mash potatoes….

Har d to ty pe wit h wom an cloud ing si ght. H a v e agood weeeek.

Pink

Picture 3-4.jpgVia BoingBoing, check out Charlie White’s new short film Pink. White is the one that has done the creepy Interpol music videos. The one with human size puppets… Afterwards, check out some of his other videos (small color bar in the left hand corner).

I just went out for some nuts.

Found this indirectly through Flickr.

Talk nerd to me.

mac A lot of buzz on the net lately has been the ability to run Windows XP on the new Intel Macs. There was a contest to see who could get XP to run first on a Mac for 13 grand; that was completed. A few weeks later Apple announces that it is including an official add-on that will aid the user in loading XP, so no need to perform a complicated hack. After Apple announced the add-on, officially named “Boot Camp” - clever one Jobs, their stock rose 10% afterwards. And I just saw an article, which I can’t locate the link right now, that a company has developed a solution to run Windows programs natively in OS X.

Dell has requested the ability to put OS X on their machines. Apple’s reply, no.

I have not been a huge fan of Apple, but I am starting to teeter on the edge of liking to maybe one time considering. Not really in the position of needing another PC. I built a P4 3.4Ghz this past December, and my AMD64 3200 laptop is about a year and half old. But I wouldn’t mind.

What gets me about Apple is their sexiness. Yes, sex. From the iPod to the Newton iTunes. The appeal to have and want is so high. Partially because demand is far greater than supply. Apple only commands 4% of the computer
market while they control almost 90% of the MP3 player market. With so much power of the MP3 market, they’ve transpired the iPod as a gateway product to their “empire” of OSes and computer hardware.

This is all marketing though. Or is it?

I was ransacking Panera for free internet and caffeine not too long ago. The ratios of glowing apples to your general laptop was 7 to 3.

So informal survey. Would you part ways with the PC world? Or would you consider some kind of bilingual setup with OS X and XP? Or the hype hasn’t gotten to you, or you are the hype?

Running through the wet grass.

I am a big fan of spring nights. Cool 60 degree weather. Slight breeze. And the shine of a full moon.

Starbucks and I have been good friends this week. So much so, that the thought of buying some of their stock has crossed my mind.

Last night was my first ball game at the *new* Busch Stadium. A beautiful stadium. Does it have anything on the *old* Busch? Glitz, glamour, and that new car smell but I still have my memories from the old stadium…04′ National League playoffs…Big Mac homerun race…the unknown Taguchi…many Cardinal - Cub games… Ladies, it was rumored in the mens stalls, as we orderly crowded into a lacking number of wall units, that your bathroom situation has improved. No more 30 minute waits.

Tonight I went on a bike ride with GTG. She’s quite the biker. Kept up with me. We did 12 miles in one hour. She made fun of me as I filled my CamelBak, my wearable backpack water blatter, “Are you serious?” First stop though, “Come on’, Shoo. Give me water.” How come the well prepared always get made fun of?

Take me out to the ball game.

20 screen shots of the same error attached to the email.

I saw the sign.

And it opened my eyes. (You can thank me later for getting an Ace of Base song stuck in your head.)

What a weekend! I made it to EIU Saturday night with GTG. Johnny, a childhood friend, was having one of his last big harahs for college life as he knows it. He’s graduating this Spring, so if anyone is looking for a high school art teacher!?!? Of course, we had to join the party. Actually, GTG ditched the fun for her good friend and some quiet time reading trashy romance novels. She’s such an English nerd.

I, on the other hand, was ready to party like it was 1999 all over again. That was so seven years ago. But I wasn’t the creepy alumn guy that came to score free booze and feel like I was 21 again. Nope. Just one of the guys. We played some cards, destroyed some stuff, and went out briefly. Okay, maybe I felt a little old when asked by a fellow partier, “Where do you go to school?” “Uhh, I’m done.”

I miss college. Then I don’t. I didn’t go away to school, but managed to make quite a few trips to campuses around the state. Ohh, do I have stories! Southern-Carbondale & Edwardsville, Western, ISU, Bloomington, UofI, Bradley…

College was a great time, but I am glad to be where I am at in life right now. I have a job that allows me to have fun, while educating me in the interests that I like. It’s hard some times to balance play and work and toys (another 23″ flat screen monitor?). And then there are the bills that interrupt play. (gah- 19″ flat screen monitor)

In conclusion… (Did that to piss off miss english nerd) John, I thought I was going to have some famous quote or life altering example. The only life altering example that I could think of was what was left in the bathroom 15 minutes ago. I digress, really you already know what you want out of this game called life. (No snake eyes) You’re an awesome artist. We’ve known eachother since we were 3. (That counts for something) Now we just have to find someone to pay you an insane amount of money for your talent! (And the naked lady panting you said you do for the casa de shoo)

Can’t wait for the graduation party!

My feet smell like popcorn butter!?

My feet stink. Just thought I’d let everyone know that.

Part of the reason my feet stink is because I had to wear the “not so casual” business wear today. And this would also include a trip to Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The company I work for has a client that has been having problems all month with our software. I have remoted in a million times trying to diagnose the problem, come up with hypothesises of why it wasn’t working, and blamed other people for the problem. Still, as hard as I tried, just wasn’t going to work that way.

I got a cold reaction from the people working when I showed up. Why wouldn’t I though? I was the root of all software evil. But after I sat down and started tweaking away at their workstations’, I was able to diagnose and fix the problem within twenty minutes.

Ohh did the smiles multiply. A task that had previous taken them over a minute to complete was now slashed to 20 seconds.

What did I change? One check box.

Worth the trip? Without a doubt.

Will they be talking about the day that the hot IT guy that showed up and fixed everything for weeks? Why yes!

Fun fact about Cedar Rapids. Home of Qauker Oats. Today it smelled like corn. Other days it can smell like Captain Crunch Berry.

Shoo-tographer.

I was just asked by someone from Illinois.com if they could use this photo (posted with blog) in an online photo showcase of Champaign, IL. I am flattered. Of course I said yes. But of all the photos, this one?

They are going to email me once it goes live. I’ll post the link.
