BBS Nostalgia

Before MySpace, Napster, AIM, Y! there were BBS’s. A dial-up portal precursor to web forums. Came across this article on Wired today. BBS’s were great. You could connect using software either through DOS or Win 3.11. Max speed at that time (around 1992) was about 14.4 with the occasional expensive 28.8 connection. You could download software (usually freeware), Doom (the original version), play some 16 color RPG games, leave messages for other members.

Timeless story I remember is my room mate got hooked on Doom and Doom 2. What Kyle obsessed with games?? Say it ain’t so. He was calling a BBS in Mt. Pulaski (not thinking of the long distance charges). I believe we were 13-14ish. He would connect to this BBS and meet people in a chat room then someone would start a multiplayer game of Doom. Well Kyle was playing several hours a day over dial-up. What are teenagers suppose to do during the summer? Let’s just say he racked up one hell of a phone bill that summer.

A list of BBS’s in the 217 area code. Cool list. They have all of the original phone numbers listed.

I used Fantasy Land, USA-1 BBS, The Quest, The Bone Yard

You know what? You don’t have to like or agree what I talk about on here.

Shoo, you can talk about whatever you want on your own website!!! I was just giving you a hard time cuz you’re obviously way smarter than me, as you graduated a full year before before me and understand all that computer jargon when I don’t even begin to.

I’m just wondering though, if you know that none of us were going to understand it, why did you write it? Isn’t the point of the website so we can all have interesting conversations together.

PS- I love you like a fat kid love cake Shoo-ey.
